“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people.”
(John Adams, second President, 1797 – 1801.)
The quote is the motto found at World News Daily”s Information Clearing House.
It would take hours per day to track all potential deceit and manipulation from any source.
This website can provide a dose of “reality check” if used every so often. Even once a month might do wonders.
I’ve said elsewhere: My parents’ strong view of the value of education was that it was/is an essential component to a healthy democratic society.
The gift of the human mind is wasted if we do not explore using all of it – including rational, logical, examination of issues – which in itself is only as valid as the quality of information. Computer use has brought us the insight: “garbage in – garbage out”.
We are dishonest when we congratulate ourselves on how cleverly we avoid being “brainwashed”. If we do not dig deep and critically into “popular ideas”, and media that provides ‘garbage in’, we are practicing the sleeping walk of the brainwashed.
Interesting that the Remote Access Medical volunteer professional teams are holding as many as 15 camps in the United States (most of their work is international in deeply impoverished countries.) At these camps, thousands of the uninsured are driving long distances, sleeping in cars/pickups, to get needed medical attention to assorted ailments and sufferings. I find precious little ‘popular media’ coverage of this (none in fact.)
Absence of reports on RAM medical camps in the United States is only a tiny example of what is not explored. You and I are in fact, not informed all the way around.
Instead, as shown in current upheaval of town hall gatherings, we are practicing non-thinking “democracy” which is not “democracy” at all. Claiming we are “practicing free speech rights” in shout-downs, before hearing what it being discussed and asking good questions, is sleep-walking of the brainwashed.
Getting “unbrainwashed” is pretty tricky. In order to wake up, the citizen is required to ask questions of his/her own beliefs – where they came from. We are required, in deep honesty, to recognize that the human mind also operates on emotion, that we are incapable of pure sustained rational thought. So we have to constantly work to know our own bias tendencies, and to balance these with our capacity to reasoned thought.
The citizen is also required to figure out how to practice and feel respect toward others without coming to cynicism, blame, and lack of capacity to trust.
Ultimately, the citizen trying to become “unbrainwashed” needs to practice TRULY independent thought. Thought not swayed by ones peers or group. Thought based in ones very own individual and innate capacity to intelligence. (I say practice as in “may never reach perfection, but work to improve”)
And simultaneously hold high value on the “common weal” – wellbeing of the whole – a whole that begins with immediate family and by logical extension reaches beyond even national borders.
Neuroscience is increasingly discovering brain chemistry – indeed whole body chemistry – supports innate commitment to the group. At the same time, science has long recognized unique individual life experience. We can only “walk in another’s mocasains” by imagination, but it is necessary that we do so if we are to appropriately commit to the group, and prevail with “democracy”.
Lack of ‘real’ information is partly addressed at the linked website. Brief check of the website shows it collects well-researched thought and information in the form of articles from a range of quality sources.
Titles of articles and links posted at the website show likely challenge to just about everyone’s “popular, favorite views”, including mine.
It is not enough to shout “we are being lied to” by Interest Group X if we assume Interest Group Y is somehow pure.
Intelligence, knowledge, comes down to individual capacity to explore data – wasted if we “give it over” to Group X or Group Y.
The task is so huge that we can only do our best, be mindful, and carry on. It would take hours per day to try to track all potential deceit (manipulation, brainwashing) from any source.

Even once a month might do wonders – check it out!
