“People Get Ready … The head and the heart are gonna drive this train”

Dear Readers!

Today I’ve introduced a new page at Thoughts from The Well: Psychology – Adler Related.

Later in the day I caught a radio panel discussion on ‘epigenetics‘. Epigenetics is a field of study finding clear and substantial links between ‘genetic at-birth potential’ and ‘environmental influence on how the genes express themselves’. Epigenetics begins to fill a ‘missing intellectual link’ between ‘nature/nurture’ as explanations for human behavior. The two, it turns out, are (not surprisingly) inter-active.

Perfect fit for Adler!” There is little, if any, contradiction between what is being learned in epigenetics, and what Alfred Adler found ‘true’ of human development. I’ve no doubt Adler would have been pleased to incorporate epigenetics into his teachings – unfortunately, Adler is unable to comment, as he was a contemporary of Freud, and lived from 1870 to 1937.

Impressed at the ‘dovetail fit’ between Adlerian practices and epigenetics information, I’ve added a University of Utah epigenetics webpage link in my Psychology – Adler Related page, (which is primarily a resource page). The UofU page offers much information, and includes teacher resources and study guides.

The BBC radio discussion then shifted to ‘enhancing human experience in human community’. Panelists agreed that “free offering of gift to others”, without calculation of “some kind of return gift”, was within human tendency, and that we’d all be better off if we made this a practice. (They briefly considered implications for American foreign policy and decided “better to start smaller”.)

Readers will understand this is not about “gifts wrapped in paper with bows”, although that would certainly fit the criteria. This kind of giving springs from innate urge to generosity. The ‘innate’ ‘proof’ for me was found in my observations of children in the classroom. Consistent, spontaneous, generosity is very common in young children, who are unlikely to ‘pause to calculate advantage/disadvantage’ when they see where ‘giving’ might fit.

Buoyed and enthused at the richness of today’s ‘exposure’ to “the best we can be”, including direct reminding of Adler, and science that supports belief in ‘our best’, I paused to ‘soak it in’ only to find the song, “People Get Ready…,” rise up in my thoughts.

I’ve gone to YouTube and found the version I share here, (live Fillmore East performance by the Chambers Brothers.) I chose this version because the ‘visuals’ give us a history of this Curtis Mayfield creation. It’s been covered by many, many top artists – as ‘religious’ performance to be sure, but covered also and perhaps even more, by artists of pop, folk, and rock genres. It’s been covered because it is beloved by musicians and audiences of all genres. This should tell us something! Most or all all artist covering it are associated with enthusiasm for head/heart change (train coming), and belief it can happen. The song is not – in its widest and deepest impact – about a particular religious teaching, or about any religion at all. Humanists and Atheists also find this song ‘resonates’ with what they know of themselves.

(Sound is not ‘perfect’ for hearing words. I post lyrics below this YouTube embed. If you ‘hear’ the song as I do, the ‘real’ message is in the ‘spirit/feel’ of the piece.) Enjoy!!

People get ready, there’s a train a comin’
You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin’
Don’t need no ticket, you just thank the Lord.

People get ready for the train to Jordan
It’s picking up passengers from coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board ’em
There’s hope for all among those loved the most.

There ain’t no room for the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just to save his own
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
For there’s no hiding place against the Kingdom’s throne

So people get ready, there’s a train a comin’

You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin’
Don’t need no ticket, you just thank the Lord.

People – get ready!

(Lyrics nearly always vary some by artist, I’d include a  line: “The head and the heart – conduct and drive this train.”)      My Best!! –MaggieAnn

About maggieannthoeni

A description once given of me was "rooted in the earth while roaming the stars" - and this has felt 'right'. I believe in something akin to this for each of us. I am a passionate supporter of discovering the autonomous self while serving the whole as primary intent. I believe in discovery of innate principles, clearing the overlay of socialization that obscures this from us. I believe it is our responsibility to leave no one behind - most particularly to respond to suffering as best we can whereever we find it, whenever we are made aware. I believe in this for the insect as well as the most magnificent form of humanity. I believe in brother/sisterhood without boundary. I believe in righteous indignation when it is appropriate, but do not believe in an enemy. I believe in consciousness, in intelligence, in logic, in rationality, in emotion, in transcendence - and am convinced until we generally practice explore and honor all this in ourselves, we remain profoundly immature. (I believe real maturity is known and practiced by many young children, and not enough adults!)
