Adam Curtis’: “The Century of The Self” (video)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

“Buyer beware” works better if the buyer is aware of his/her subconscious ‘decision drivers’! Here is the full version of Adam Curtis’ “The Century of The Self”. All four episodes are ‘one viewing’, about 4 hrs in length. With greatest gratitude to ‘therebel.org’ who posted on Vimeo! Continue reading

March on Washington – 50th Anniversary – Dr. Martin Luther King Shared His Dream (Video)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

This weekend’s national events include honoring the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 civil rights March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. I post an embedded version here. I do not review the historical context, but provide a link for that information. Both sound and video quality (of the event in real time) are good. Continue reading

Of Buckminster Fuller – With Devoted Appreciation (Video)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

Every time I … dip into the mind, personality, and world of Buckminster Fuller, (1895-1983), I ‘fall in love all over again’. …As you watch the film “Reflections: R. Buckminster Fuller (1977)”, you will meet a person who speaks from the heart, (without a trace of sentimentality), about where his inventive mind takes him, (on a journey through the cosmos, while rooted in practical, pragmatic, goals). … His solutions lie in creative thinking, creative design, and attention to resource use. He explains how observing a ‘typical and normal’ situation triggered questions for him that informed his creative mind. He presents his vision of what could be – if we choose to ‘make it so’. He expresses confidence that IF we so choose, we’ll find ourselves ‘freed up’ from deprivation and fighting. Once ‘freed up’ we’ll enter humanity’s next range of possibilities. … Continue reading

Zimmerman Trial – What of the Restorative Justice Process ?

This gallery contains 1 photo.

Neither Trayvon Martin nor George Zimmerman was born to become known for the reasons we’ve come to know them. How does a society weary of wasted and lost potential of the new-born infant begin to find deeper understanding, even healing, that might lead to a better future? “What if Restorative Justice practices were (or had been) used – to combine justice with healing from this painful event?” My thoughts and some wisdom from experts … There is a nagging – to many, sacred, – sense that “we have something better to bring to Tribe Human than we’ve found so far”. … I believe that nagging has always pestered us. It explains much … It pesters us for a reason … Continue reading

We Are The Help That’s On The Way (If We Pay Attention)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

David Brooks observes: “This is symptom of a larger problem.” The larger problem is that our entire culture’s sense of ‘success’ is skewed to a measure of success that lacks social trust. It would take much writing to ‘unpack’ the relevance of what Brooks ‘runs by us’ in a mere 18 minute talk. Instead of trying to do so, I post the talk here. Enjoy and take heart! We’re on the right track! Continue reading

Brain research the new ‘moon shot’ – CNN.com (Reflections)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

I’ve not said so before, but sparked by a popular question these days of “What shall we do next?”, (now that ‘space exploration phases 1 and 2 – moon and shuttle – have come to a close). I’ve privately thought: “Oh!, Let’s learn what we need to know about ourselves so we can create a future that includes everyone!” More publicly, my entire blog is dedicated to helping spark interest in just such an initiative — in which we dedicate ourselves to learning and doing what we need to learn and do, to create an inclusive society, a society in which we uplift one another. I both appreciate, and have a caution, about a proposal that wants to elevate “brain study” to a space-race equivalent. Continue reading

Lars von Trier Cannes Banishment Needs 2nd Look

This gallery contains 1 photo.

We’d rather live with our own suppressed disturbed feelings about Hitler than listen to this man. We abhor the least hint that ordinary humans, including ourselves, might have a ‘shadow side’ corruptibility. …Even when we know this to be true, we’d just as soon ‘stay as far from it as possible’. We’re even willing to banish and shun – to create physical separation between ourselves and anyone who might, by action or word, ‘energize’ our ‘fear of the human monstrous’. Continue reading

IMF Policies and Dominique Strauss-Kahn; Strauss-Kahn’s Arrest Effectively Removes His Influence?

This gallery contains 1 photo.

“Ultimately, employment and equity are building blocks of economic stability and prosperity, of political stability and peace. This goes to the heart of the IMF’s mandate. It must be placed at the heart of the policy agenda.” (Dominique Strauss-Kahn to the IMF) NOTE: By Tuesday afternoon, with more info on victim made public, I’ve added an update to my original post. This story has at least two, not necessarily easily connected, ‘threads’ worth thought. One is appropriate legal response and justice in support of the victim; one is our mindfulness of IMF policy – broad global issues of justice. Overall theme at “Thoughts From The Well” is to encourage our use of the 21st Century to transition from ‘head/power-over’ paradigms in human society to ‘head/heart’ paradigms. Continue reading

Ecuador’s Long Struggle with Chevron and its Predecessor Standard Oil

This gallery contains 1 photo.

The Ecuador-Chevron video I’ve made available here is 3 minutes. All humanity, all life everywhere, is vulnerable to deadly exploitation by our well-entrenched economic practice of “progress by profit and profit by expansion.” Status-quo’ does not challenge itself. The challenge must come from that ‘ordinary voice’, and the ordinary voice must be informed, thoughtful, and firm. Continue reading

Glencore: Profiteering from hunger and chaos – Features – Al Jazeera English (Reflections)

This gallery contains 1 photo.

This world needs economic systems that do what economic systems ‘theoretically’ are supposed to do. They’re supposed to serve humanity. They’re supposed to help us uplift ourselves and one another toward greater fulfillment of our astonishing potential and promise. … This post features an Al Jazeera article on food insecurity, but offers also larger awareness. The better we understand, the better we can be strict and clear in our questions and demands to those we elect. Continue reading
